Maria Rita began her professional career in earnest at 24. Soon after stepping on that which she considers sacred -the stage- it became clear that she had found her home. Ever since then, Maria Rita has enchanted the world. Her work has generated four records, three DVDs, six Latin Grammies, and nearly two million records sold (in Brazil alone!)
She overcomes the limits imposed by language and brings the deep, emotional aspects of her music to audiences around the world. Venues have included the Montreux Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, Irving Plaza (NY), the San Francisco Jazz Festival, and presentations em more than 30 countries, including Germany, Canada, Denmark, France, the U.K., Italy, Japan, Sweden, and Switzerland.
In 2011, Maria Rita released Elo, a record of the show she had been presenting over the previous year; a show that began without a name, scenery, a set repertoire, but that nonetheless took shape as the months went by, finally reaching its present format with stunning interpretations of songs such as “Conceição dos Coqueiros” (Lula Queiroga) and “Santana” (Junio Barreto). In a mix of new material such as “Pra Matar Meu Coração” (Pedro Baby/Daniel Jobim) and well-established compositions like “Coração em Desalinho” (Mauro Diniz e Ratinho), the singer reinterprets known classics such as “Nem Um Dia” (Djavan), “Só de Você” (Rita Lee), and “Menino do Rio” (Caetano Veloso), the latter having been made famous by Baby Consuelo and which now carries on its allure through Maria Rita’s voice.
Akin to an architect, the singer manages to lead her audience through the most complex of feelings using an instrument that she dominates masterfully -her voice- which is accompanied by the tight and talented trio of Thiago Costa (piano), Sylvinho Mazzucca (bass), and CucaTeixeira (drums).
With her new “Elo” Tour, Maria Rita proves that less is the best and most complex manner of finding beauty, where the most important scenery is the stage and the main attraction is the music. It is as simple as that. It is Maria Rita.
